The School and Accreditation
Fukuoka International School (FIS), founded in 1972, is a private coeducational day school offering classes from prekindergarten through Grade 12. All graduating seniors receive an FIS diploma accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Japanese Ministry of Education as a School Juridical Body “Gakko Hojin.” Since 2007, FIS has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the IB Diploma in Grade 11 and Grade 12. The school year is divided into two semesters, August-January and January-June.
The high school student body currently has 52 students from 13 countries. Of those 17% are American, 27% are Korean, 29% are host nationals, and 27% are from other countries. The senior class has 10 students.
Students must complete a minimum of 24 credits with a minimum of 85% attendance for graduation. Details on credits required:

Course Offerings 2014-2015
Currently, FIS does not offer the IB Middle Years Program, so no IB courses are available below Grade 11. The IB Diploma is the core curriculum for grades 11 and 12; students may take courses at the IB or non-IB level of difficulty. These are clearly identified on the transcript as "IB" or “non-IB. FIS supports students in IB Online and Self-Taught courses whenever possible. Here is the list of courses offered at FIS.

Grades 9 and 10: Students receive A-F grades, with a * denoting a modification for ELL (English Language Learners) students. "A" grades may not receive stars. A indicates 90% or above, B from 80% to 90%, C from 70% to 80%, D from 60% to 70%, and F below 60%. The passing mark is a D.
Grades 11 and 12: All students are marked on the IB Diploma/Certificate 1-7 scale, with 7 as the highest mark. The passing mark in an IB course (Diploma or Certificate) is 3; the passing mark for non-IB is 2.
Class Rank & GPA
Due to the transitory student population, FIS does not calculate GPA or class rank.
IB Exam Results
In May of 2014, a total of 11 candidates took 57 IB exams. Passing scores of 3 or higher were achieved on all exams.
